In the wake of the flooding and landslides that occurred in KwaZulu-Natal in April and May 2022, 448 people have been left dead and greater than 40 000 displaced, with damage to roads, faculties, water infrastructure and companies.
On 18 April, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a nationwide state of catastrophe. As repairs received underway, one of the first issues many flooded companies faced was to get rid of the water and particles in their factories or warehouse premises. The Werner Pumps rental unit, a combination jetting and vacuum truck, was put to good use to help with the clean-up operations.
“We rented our unit to 2 firms for a quantity of weeks at a time to assist them in servicing their clients’ in Durban and the encompassing areas after the horrific flooding,” says Sebastian Werner, Managing Director at Werner Pumps. “It’s the first time that the unit has been used for disaster recovery efforts after flooding. It was good to be able to assist ultimately by sending the mix truck from our head workplaces in Springs right down to our KwaZulu-Natal clients to help. It should have done an excellent job because one of the corporations has now ordered one from us to help with their ongoing air pollution control and industrial clean-up operations.”

We’ve found there’s demand for the unit from municipalities and contractors to bridge a niche when they’re waiting on a unit, or for finances to become out there, and for people who want it for a specific time-bound application.”
Ultimately, Werner says, the company wish to build up its rental fleet to service the growing demand. “When one thing occurs and someone urgently wants a truck, as was the case with the flooding, we would like to have the power to ship them one instantly,” he says. “Our aim has always to be a one-stop store, and to make sure our clients are ready keep operating at all times, so we’re discovering ways to assist them do that.”
