The documentary was created by Excellent Cadaver, a manufacturing company founded by Lawrence and her good friend Justine Ciarrocchi, BBC reported. They collaborated with Sahra Mani, a documentary maker who co-founded the independent Kabul production company, Afghan Doc House. Mani had already begun a venture following three girls making an attempt to establish some autonomy within the months after the Taliban takeover, as women and girls had been barred from universities and colleges.
Mani used covert cameras and even asked the ladies to film themselves at safehouses with their friends and households. One sequence captures a secret assembly in a windowless basement in Kabul, the place more than a dozen women from completely different protest groups collect. Mani was well aware of the challenges of filming in such non-public and harmful situations, but she emphasizes that these ladies usually are not victims, but heroes.
Balancing the safety of the women and telling their story was not simple, and Mani had a number of late-night conversations with Ciarrocchi and Lawrence during the manufacturing process. With Mani and the opposite girls featured now in another country, the producers felt comfortable submitting Bread and Roses for wider distribution, beginning at Cannes.
